Hi Dave,

There are numeorus charities with presence in the town, but a lot of them are nationals and not local. Dr Kershaws hospice is a local charity based in Royton and works with those that suffer from incurable life threatening illnesses.
Thanks Phil I'll look into that, I have actually heard of them before so I might give them a ring and take it from there.

Cheers!

I agree,

Dr. Kershaws is a charity that is close to my heart. I have done fund raising in the past for them and so have all my family. They were fantastic with my aunite when she was there, making the time there as comfortable as possible. The staff all do a great job.
Another vote for Doctor Kershaws. They do a fantastic job, not just for their patients but for all family and friends that visit.

I'm not sure if this counts as a charity or not, but have you ever heard of freecycle. They are a not for profit organisation that operates as a free way in which to offer up goods you no longer require. So for instance, rather than taking a sofa to the tip, you place it on here for free.

Oldham Freecycle Link

With people struggling in the current financial climate, it may be a good idea to get the word out to people not aware of this site.
Hi Bradley,

I am pretty sure that would not count as a charity, however I do like the idea. Do you know anybody involved with the company? They are welcome to join the OBN and promote their business on the Advertise Your Business Here forum
Hi,
Voluntary Action Oldham have a database of Oldham based charities if you are still looking. If you go to http://vaoldham.org.uk/ and 'search groups' then put in charity as a search term you should get quite a few results. Otherwise we have the 2010 editions of Charities Digest and Charity Choice here at the library, they can be searched by charity type and location (but only up to a point).
Hope that helps,
Vickie
That's useful, thanks Vickie!

The RSPCA are members on here, as are soroptomists.   There are a few others around too but any speciality e.g. animals, children, special needs?

How About Dr Kershaw's hospice I am holding a custard bath on Feb 12th for them and am looking for volunteers to do 20 Minutes in the Bath

re the charity unsure if you are still interested/looking but I found this today whilst on the net and thought it might appeal to OBN and some individual members too.  It's a couple of job clubs in Oldham under the GB jobclubs banner (check out the directory under O) and perhaps we might just help with time if nothing else if people want to start up businesses as we have our own experiences and skills we could share.   Just a thought ...

If you are still looking for a charity, I am sure the of the RSPCA Bury & Oldham Branch (which is run from the animal centre at Rhodes Bank, Oldham) would really welcome any support, for example with fund raising activities, promotion of events/clinics, donations including goods for sale in their shops, sharing information about animal welfare issues, other). I would be happy to make a personal introduction to the branch manager if there is support available through the OBN.

Hi David,

If you are still looking for a charity to support, Mahdlo would love to hear from you or anyone who would like to get involved.  We are due to open on 19th March and are really excited about what 2012 will bring for Oldham.

Mahdlo aims to make a real difference by providing opportunities for young people from across Oldham to come together to meet friends, have new experiences, learn new skills and access the support they need to develop and achieve their potential.

We will be open whenever school is closed 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year for just £5 per year membership and just 50p  young people will have access to over 25 positive activities each session.
