It is a common misconception that if your car is still under warranty, then you have to take it to the main dealer for repairs and servicing. THIS IS NOT THE CASE!!!!.

Previously, motorists were required to have their vehicle servicing and repairs at the main dealer so as not to risk invalidating the vehicle's warranty. The EC Block Exemption Regulation 1400/2002 (October 2003) allows motorists more flexibility in selecting where they can get their car serviced.

Thanks to this legislation, maintenance and service work does not have to be done by the main dealer as long as the garage uses Original Equipment 'Matching Quality' parts, and are recorded as such, and the garage follow the manufacturer's service schedules.

The Block Exemption Regulation (BER) covers service and maintenance during the warranty period and prohibits vehicle manufacturers’ warranties from including conditions that require:

  • all normal maintenance be provided within the vehicle manufacturer’s network

  • all parts used must be the manufacturer’s original spare parts

So what does this mean to the Motorist?

BER safeguards free competition in aftermarket parts, repairs and services and will benefit motorists by reducing the cost of servicing through better labour rates and competitively priced parts.Prestige Car Repairs provides a low cost servicing solution with savings of up to 60% on the main dealers. In many cases we do more on the particular service than recommended.

Good discussion Paul and obviously what you say is correct, As you know I work for the Main Dealers selling parts to garages and the one thing I would always say to anyone is that Main Dealers parts can be as competitively priced as "aftermarket parts" and that Garages should always check prices with the Main Dealers as our trade programmes offer fantastic value so in effect your customers would get a fantastic value for money service from you with Main Dealer Parts still being fitted.  So a message to everyone would be to ask your garage to make sure they check the price of the parts with the main dealer. If anyone needs any advice on parts just ask.

Nice to see this sort of discussion starting, Well Done Paul.

Regards

Neil

Neil you are very correct in what you say. On many occasions I use the main dealer for parts as they fit right 1st time and are cheaper. Many aftermarket suppliers inflate the RRP to make it look like better discount they are giving you.
