When I tell people about Yellowtom, one of the first questions I am asked is "Is it anything to do with Yell..."? which is then usually followed by reasons why I shouldn't associate with Yell.
Should I mention that I am not Yell.com?
After all they can't do what I do and charge considerably more for for less, so I'm told by my customers.
What experiences have you had from Yell.com or the Yellowpages?
To be clear, I am not associated with Yell other than the word yellow.

I had a car alarm fitting business years ago (when cars were not fitted with alarms as standard), Yellow Pages talked me into being listed with them and having a nice sized advert. i think in total i got no work from it.
However i am sure if Yellowtom was around then, that would have worked!
I would only tell them if they mention it

I would only mention it if they bring it up.
Hi Andy,
I did a six week contract in the yell.com websites department and got a earful of their customer complaints.
Yell are not managing their custo, ers accounts very well. Their systems are flawed.
You do not want your customers coming back to you with complaints intended for Yell. If they are then finding out at that stage that you are not associated with Yell then I would presume they would be unhappy.
I think a better strategy is to be straight about it and directly sell against Yell. I can recognise a Yell website and I often have sold against them because they are are going downhill so fast nowadays. I think there are people getting business from them but I don't think anyone is soley relying on yell for all their marketing...including yell who invest heavily in Google!

My usual experience from people who use Yell as a Marketing tool is that it's a waste of money but I do see odd occasions when it works. This is usually when they are offering a localised service but I am currently working with an IT Support company in Oldham who have a sponsored advertisement with Yell and it is working very well for them. Interesting to hear that most people here have bad experiences.
Cheers
Ian

thanks for the feedback.
It's interesting about the results. Maybe that's why advertising in directories has bad press.
Luckily most of my customers renew so I must be doing something right.
In conclusion, I'll tell customers I'm not Yell.com if they ask.
