In the past week I have had two major raised eyebrow moments on LinkedIn. I thought I would share them as examples of how not to use LinkedIn for business. It is advice that applies equally to Oldham Business Network, or any other social media platform where you want to make a positive and professional impression.
Last week I declined the kind offer to connect with someone on LinkedIn whose profile picture was of himself sunbathing, shades on and displaying his chest and…Continue
I shall start by apologising to those women (and I know there will be some) who disagree with me on this subject, but I am willing to bet you have yet to sample motherhood. I am actually a little tired of hearing that we women can have everything we want in life, if we are only willing to put in the effort. It is simply not true.
Life, if you are trying to combine work and motherhood, is one long series of compromises and sacrifices. Women who choose to make business their priority…Continue
I have just seen the following posted on Facebook:
FOLLOWING the success of TradersOutlet’s in Sale and Altrincham, the popular independent outlet is opening at Waterloo Mill in Oldham.
Waterloo Mill will specialise in discounted branded fashions, homewares, toys, shoes, luggage, bags and accessories, and will be the latest addition to the successful TradersOutlet concession format. Planned to…
I'm sure everyone saw Helen Mirren's bold pink hair on the red carpet at the Baftas. It prompted me to write a little blog on the subject. It also got me thinking about the whole issue of image in business because, if I'm honest, I've always secretly fancied trying out pink hair.
When I worked in the corporate world it was never…Continue

I've posted it everywhere else, so I might as well post it here too. Here's where I 'confess' to being one of the 25% of people whose lives are blighted by depression. You don't see too many business people admitting to being members of the club. So what do you think? Have I dropped a commercial clanger with my World Mental Health Day blog?…Continue
If you will forgive me a little shameless self-promotion, I have just discovered to my delight that one of my photographs has been chosen as a finalist in Oldham Council's Love Where You Live photography competition.
I was a little taken aback, as I wouldn't have counted it as one of my best images, but, as a photo of our community Jubilee party in our Chadderton…Continue

As a Shaw girl and the mother of a two-year-old I have been deeply saddened by the events in Shaw this week. I have friends directly involved who do not know when they are going to be allowed back home. I have been in touch with the group organising all the help and donations and I have offered to co-ordinate efforts from OBN members. As the local business community I am sure there is a lot we can do as a group to help.
There is a fund-raising event being organised and raffle/auction…Continue

A couple of weeks ago I was called by Groupon, offering me the 'fantastic' opportunity to include my Lipgloss and Lenses vintage makeover photoshoots as one of their daily voucher offers. I declined. Why? Read on.........

I have given the Oldham Mums in Business group a bit of a revamp, including a new name, Bizzy Mummies. This is because I do not want to restrict membership of the group to Oldham businesses.
I have set up a Facebook group too at www.facebook.com/groups/354377607948799/. Please feel free to join it and invite any other mums in business you know.
I am lining up a programme of events featuring guest speakers. One of the…Continue

Hello you lovely generous OBN types. Hopefully you know by now that Jude Gidney, Sam Mills and I are organising a vintage and handmade fair on June 3rd to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. The tea room at the event is being run by volunteers from Dr Kershaw's Hospice with all proceeeds from the sale of afternoon teas going to the hospice.
For various reasons Dr Kershaw's is struggling for manpower that weekend so I am appealing on their behalf for people to help run the tea room for…Continue

Anyone who follows my ramblings on here, Facebook, Twitter or Oldham Business Network will know I have been on a bit of a crusade recently about supporting local makers and designers. I had started to feel a bit uncomfortable recently that in my work as a makeup artist I wasn't exactly practising what I preach.
Read all about what I have done about it.....…Continue

The Apprentice's Karren Brady was on Daybreak this morning plugging her new book and putting forward the viewpoint that working mums are generally happier than stay at home mums. As someone who is a full time stay at home mum and a businesswoman, I am very interested in what other people think.
I have written a blog on the…Continue
Plans for the vintage festival are coming along very nicely and I can now announce that the event will have backing from Oldham Council, although the details are yet to be worked out. Work is underway on publicity materials and the number of events taking place during the weekend is growing.
For those who have missed it so far, the festival will take place across Saddleworth during the Jubilee bank holiday weekend. It is the first weekend in June, which also happens to be Whit…Continue

Just a quick post as I'm off out to work, but for those who haven't heard yet OBN won the business category at the Pride in Oldham Awards last night. A great time was had by all and here we all are celebrating. More photos when I get a bit of time.…Continue
