On the 30th April a new member joined the OBN under the name Cally Smith. Viewing her profile it was clear to see that she was not a genuine member and had no intention of being part of the community for the right reasons. Many of you will have received an email from her saying that she had read your profile and that she was interested in speaking with you. She also provided her email address so you could contact her direclty.

There is no need for you to provide a member with your direct email address if they have contacted you through the OBN and especially where you do not know them, as this may be an attempt by a spammer to get hold of your direcly email address and pass your details on for third party marketing purposes.

This is the activity of a typical spam member and in these instances or where you suspect a member may be a spammer we ask that you be vigilant and report these activities to us as soon as possible. Cally joined the network on the 30th April and was banned the same day. You will not be able to find her profile on the OBN for this reason.

We received several emails from OBN members reporting Cally Smith and we thank you for your assistance is preventing these spammers from damaging the community.

Yes, thanks Phil.  I had an email but didn't bother to read it it was so obviously spam.  Just shows the lengths people will go to though!

Thanks, i too had an email saying that she was from a deprived family but still had plenty of money which says that she will deposit into my account if i could arrange for her to come and live in the uk. This is a typical scam and i soon told her where to go ( Assuming she was a she !! )

Hi Phil

Is it not easier for you to 'approve' new members? As the site grows so too will the number of spammers.

By the time I read my email from Cally you had already deleted her - well done, very vigilant.
