Our town is in the news in a big way this week, with the specially convened court in Uppermill for the Woolas case. It is the first of its kind for 99 years! For those of you who don't know...former immigration minister Phil Woolas has been challenged by defeated Liberal Democrat rival, Elwyn Atkins, who claims the general election vote was swayed by false allegations in Labour leaflets.
It is alleged Woolas used doctored photographs, misrepresented
facts and 'stooped to fomenting racial and religious divisions' in a bid to win the seat. The court was told that false statements were made in three publications on behalf of Woolas in the last few days before the election. Woolas won the seat for Oldham East and Saddleworth with a majority of just 103 votes following two recounts.
Apparently only 40 seats out of a 100 were taken in the public gallery yesterday, I would have expected a queue? This is big news surely? And, for me at least, it raises questions about honesty in advertising, will this case lead to more scrutiny? Do you know about the Committee of Advertising Practice and Advertising Standards Authority ? Does all your marketing copy comply?
